Designed for KS3 students, this is a really fun and engaging winter-themed lesson to introduce students to an unseen poem.
It's ideal for a proactive lesson focusing on the seasons, meaningful Christmas activity or end-of-term lesson, with a series of thoughtfully scaffolded group activities to build students' confidence around unseen poem analysis and even their oracy skills.
The lesson resource includes presentation activities, discussion tasks, timed challenges and analytical, PEE-style tasks to build their understanding of how to approach older unseen poems, focusing on Robert Louis Stevenson's accessible 1885 poem 'Winter-Time'.
An example task from the lesson resource:
Prepare and plan out a presentation on the following question about the poem:
In ‘Winter-Time’, how does the poet present the speaker’s feelings about winter?
You can be as creative as you like and present your analysis of the poem in one of the ways below or another of your choosing:
- A storyboard
- A cartoon
- A speech
- A poster
- A TikTok video
- A tableau
- A monologue/dialogue
You can use your notes from the table activity to help support your work here.
As a class, you can use this set of criteria to assess each presentation and deliver constructive feedback:
