Analysing an opening chapter

A close text analysis summary table and an overview table, designed for analysing the effectiveness of an opening chapter of a novel, although the resource would work equally well for summarising an unseen fiction extract.

The resource comprises two tables:

• a list of stylistic features for which students find quotations
• a list of key features (author, title, characters, events etc.) for which students identify the key facts.

The tables would also work well when promoting whole-school independent reading initiatives or for World Book Day.
